Art Placement & Advisory for Homes That Want to Feel Complete
Whether you’re starting from scratch or refining a collection, I help you choose and place art so your space feels cohesive, refined and personal.
Private, respectful, and tailored to you — no pressure, no “one-size-fits-all.”
Who I work with
I work best with people who care about the long view and want their work presented clearly, honestly, and well.
Collectors
You already own art, but the placement feels off — or the home has changed and the walls haven’t caught up.
Beginning Collectors
You’ve never bought art (or only a little). You want guidance that’s friendly, practical, and confidence-building.
Second Home Owners
You want your second home to feel intentional — not temporary — with art that fits how you actually live in the space.
The consultation is where the clarity begins
Most people don’t call because they know exactly what they need — they call because something feels incomplete. The consultation is a guided conversation and a careful look at your space. From there, we identify what fits, what doesn’t, and what’s possible.
Talk through what you’re drawn to (even if you’re not sure yet)
Read the space — furniture, light, layout, flow
Identify the “missing pieces” and what would bring cohesion
Create options that match your comfort level (including budget)
A process that adapts to you
There isn’t a script — because people aren’t scripted. Some clients are highly visual. Some need to talk things through. Others need to try something and live with it for a while. My role is to meet you where you are and move at a pace that feels right.
Start with a Conversation
We begin by talking about your space, your taste, and what feels right—no pressure, no jargon.
Explore Possibilities
I introduce styles, artists, and placement ideas so you can see what’s possible in your environment.
Try It in Your Space
When possible, we test placement at home. That’s where clarity and confidence usually click.
Refine at Your Pace
Some decisions are immediate, others take time. We adjust until the space feels settled and complete.
A simple first step. No obligation.
A home shaped by the art
A client came to me with a beautifully designed home and an existing collection, yet something about the space still felt unresolved. The rooms were expansive and interconnected, and the process of deciding what belonged where had become more overwhelming than inspiring.
So we slowed things down. Through conversation and careful observation, we focused on how the home was truly lived in — the way light moved through the rooms, how people naturally gathered, the sightlines between spaces, and the mood each area carried. Rather than forcing decisions, we allowed the right placements to emerge over time.
The result was a home that feels calmer, more connected, and more complete.
What if art isn’t simply the finishing touch, but that which allows a house to become a home — connected and at ease?

What I often hear people say:
I am a career artist in the area and I’ve known Jim for over 30 years. When Jim had his gallery, my husband William Crook showed with him and we became close friends. I’ve told him for years that he should be a Design Consultant. He has a unique talent for going into a room and being able to rearrange a client’s art collection. He can place a painting in just the right spot to show it to its best advantage—and he loves to do it.
-Elaine Manning Crook
Jim has been our go-to man for consulting and purchasing our art. Over the years he has been our professional expert and now a dear friend. We appreciate his trustfuness and integrity.
-Larry and Fay
I consider James Ratliff to be a true Renaissance man. He understands and appreciates art history, dedicated artists, acquisitions, display techniques, and the importance and power of a creative environment. Jim has owned and managed galleries for dozens of years and has a wide circle of artist friends and clients. He is an art consultant of the highest degree and takes great pride in matching people with art!
